I Hate Mondays

Yes, it's a Monday.
And I remember that last week this song was forwarded to me by a schoolmate (Thanks Nikki!) and it has given me some thoughts. Along with the lyrics was the story behind the song. Here goes:

This is about Brenda Spencer, a 16-year-old San Diego high school student who lived across from an elementary school. On Monday, January 29, 1979, she opened fire on the school with a rifle, killing 2 adults (including the principal) and injuring 9 kids before going back to her home. Police surrounded her home and waited for 7 hours until she gave herself up. In that time, she spoke with a reporter on the phone.

When asked why she did it, she replied, "I just started shooting, that's it. I just did it for the fun of it. I just don't like Mondays. I just did it because it's a way to cheer the day up. Nobody likes Mondays."

Lyrics

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload.
And nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's going to make them stay at home.
And Daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold.
And he can see no reason,
'Cause there are no reasons.
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

The telex machine is kept so clean,
And it types to a waiting world.
And Mother feels so shocked,
Father's world is rocked,
And their thoughts turn to
Their own little girl.
Sweet 16 ain't that peachy keen,
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat.
They can see no reasons,'
Cause there are no reasons.
What reasons do you need?
Oh, Oh Oh, Woah!

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down,
Down, down...shoot it on down!

And all the playing's stopped in the playground now;
She wants to play with her toys a while.
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning,
And the lesson today is how to die!
And then the bullhorn crackles,
And the captain cackles,
With the problems and the how's and why's.
And he can see no reasons,'
Cause there are no reasons.
What reason do you need to die?
Die? Oh Oh Oh!

And The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload.
Oh, and nobody's gonna go to school today,

She's going to make them stay at home.
And Daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold.
And he can see no reason
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like...I don't like...
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.

Tell me why?
I don't like...I don't like...
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

Can you imagine shooting people without definite reasons other than such strong dislike for that particular day of the week? Of course, there's something even more to that.

One cannot tell what's going on in someone's mind. Some people may look normal but then again you never know if that person has been harboring turmoil inside her. Then just one day ... she goes boom! ..... and hated Mondays.

As with my children, communication is a vital part of our relationship. Especially now that I have teens already, I see to it that I have time to listen to their stories -- both rantings and ravings about school work and friends. We have what we call bonding moments.

And lastly, never keep firearms at home. Or if you do, please keep out of children's reach.
